3 things you can do to build more Work:Life Harmony

Are you choosing to live with Work:Life Harmony?

This is a fundamental question that all of us should spend time figuring out for ourselves. The answer isn’t necessarily an easy one to arrive at though.

There are a lot of different things that are trying to get our attention and can pull us in different directions from one moment to the next. It is vital to be intentional about finding harmony in our lives because no one else is going to do it for us.

How do you find harmony? Where do you look? What types of things create harmony for you? There are some factors that go into being able to figure out what the answers are for you. Consider the following:

1) Do you regularly experience a sense of flow in the work that you are doing?

If you feel like you struggle to find a rhythm in your work, I would say that you do not have a sense of flow. If you are set on continuing to work this way and don’t see a problem with it, the work will always feel like there is no end. When there is a feeling that there is no end to the work, a sense of harmony is difficult to achieve.

“One of the most frequently mentioned dimensions of the flow experience is that, while it lasts, one is able to forget all the unpleasant aspects of life.” – Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

2)  Do you regularly feel exhausted from the work you are doing?

Sure we all have moments when we can feel tired from the work we are doing. But we shouldn’t live in a perpetual state of mental exhaustion. This will have a negative impact to your holistic life, both professional and personal.

In other words, if you think you are able to work in a job that has little to no flow without it having negative effects on your life, you are only fooling yourself.

3)  Are you practicing acceptance for the things that happen in your life?

If we view the things that happen around us as being anything but neutral, we will have a tendency to paint them into a certain kind of light. All things that happen just are, when we can learn to accept them for what they are, we will have a much easier time finding harmony for ourselves.

Because no matter what is happening around you, if you’re able to accept it, enduring the unpleasant things becomes a little easier.

Take time regularly to reflect on these 3 things. Then think about the activities that you are choosing to do or not do. If you determine in your mind to find work that allows you to be in flow, not be constantly exhausted, and regularly accept things as they are, it will have a direct relationship to the amount of Work:Life Harmony you feel.
